Basic Bone Broth

Bone broth is one of the best gut healing foods and it’s easy to make at home! It’s high in glutamine, collagen, and minerals that help decrease inflammation and rebuild the small intestinal lining. Including 1-2 cups daily, along with a low-inflammation diet, helps speed healing from virtually any digestive issue!

Ingredients:

2 lbs bones of choice (beef marrow, chicken, turkey, etc)

1 gallon purified water

2 TBSP apple cider vinegar

1 small yellow onion, peeled and roughly chopped

3-4 garlic cloves, peeled

2 carrots, roughly chopped

4 celery stalks, roughly chopped

2-3 teaspoons sea salt

Directions:

  • Crock pot method: Add bones, water and vinegar and let sit for 30 minutes. This gives the vinegar time to make minerals in the bones more available. Add remaining ingredients and cook everything on low setting for 12-24 hours (24 hours is preferable to extract all the beneficial components from the bones).
  • Instant Pot Method: Add all ingredients (except water) to Instant Pot. Add water last- fill until the pot is 2/3 full. Close the lid and turn the valve to “Sealing.” Manually set the Instant Pot to 120 minutes on HIGH pressure. When broth has finished cooking, allow Instant Pot to depressurize before you open the lid.
  • Stovetop Method: Add bones, water and vinegar to a dutch oven or large soup pot. Allow to sit for 30 minutes. This gives the vinegar time to make minerals in the bones more available. Add remaining ingredients and turn stove to high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for at least 8 hours (24 is preferable to extract all the beneficial components from the bones)

Once broth is fully cooked, strain the broth through a fine metal strainer and discard the bones and vegetables. Broth can be stored in the fridge up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
